What Is an E-Challan?
An e-challan (electronic challan) is a digital traffic fine issued by traffic police or automated enforcement systems across India. Under the Motor Vehicles (Amendment) Act, 2019, traffic authorities can issue challans electronically through cameras, handheld devices, and speed guns — and the notice is sent directly to the registered vehicle owner via SMS or post.
If you've received an SMS about a pending challan or want to verify whether your vehicle has any outstanding fines, the official eChallan portal is the place to go.
Official Portal for E-Challan
The Government of India operates the official e-challan system at: echallan.parivahan.gov.in
This portal is managed by the Ministry of Road Transport and Highways (MoRTH) and is integrated with the National Informatics Centre (NIC). All state traffic police departments feed challan data into this system.

- Select your search type: You can search by:

- Vehicle Number (Registration Number)
- Driving Licence Number
- Enter your details and complete the CAPTCHA verification.

Can You Pay E-Challan Offline?
Yes. If you prefer to pay in person, you can visit:
- Your local traffic police station
- Designated challan collection centres (varies by state)
- Some state RTO offices
Carry a printout or screenshot of the challan notice and a valid ID when visiting in person.
What Happens If You Don't Pay?
Ignoring an e-challan can lead to:
- Increased fine amounts in some states
- Difficulty in renewing vehicle registration or fitness certificate
- Legal action in cases of serious violations
- Vehicle impoundment upon interception by traffic police
Tips to Keep in Mind
- Always save your payment confirmation receipt.
- Check the challan portal regularly, especially if you've been in a new city.
- Update your mobile number in the vehicle RC at the RTO to receive SMS alerts for challans.
- If a challan appears to be wrongly issued, do not ignore it — you have the right to contest it (see our guide on contesting challans).
Paying your e-challan promptly keeps your driving record clean and avoids legal complications. The entire process takes just a few minutes online.
